Dr. Erica Smithwick Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Penn State
Director, Center for Landscape Dynamics, Penn State

Landscape ecology is a scientific paradigm that is useful for relating spatial patterns to ecological process. More broadly, this framework can also be useful for addressing complex interactions between social and ecological systems, in which patterns and processes are increasingly shaped by human activity. Using case studies from Ghana, South Africa, and the Menominee Nation (Wisconsin), Dr. Smithwick will explore how ecosystem management be enhanced through transformative research and education approaches that embrace interdisciplinary and cross-cultural ways of knowing.
